Baby Namings

There is something beautiful about introducing a new person into the world.

There is a tangible feeling of connection and shared joy holding a newborn, speaking their name aloud and telling everyone gathered, "This is your community."

Baby Namings are a ceremony to welcome your child to their community and family. It is a time to offer blessings and well-wishes for the life that lies ahead, and also to recognise the new roles we step into as parents, grandparents and siblings.

Creating your naming ceremony

We will spend time exploring what you want this moment to mean and who you would like to involve. The ceremony can draw on traditions that are meaningful to your family and include blessings, readings, music or rituals that feel like yours.

Together, we shape these elements into a ceremony that gives voice to the hopes you hold for your child, and invites the people who matter to make their own commitment to loving and supporting them as they grow.

Kind words

My wife and I grew up Catholic but have drifted away from the church. I wanted our son to be initiated in the spirit but did not want to do it within the Catholic Church and its belief in original sin. And yet, I felt something was missing between the joy of his arrival and the typical new-parent difficulties of 3 a.m. feedings, healthcare paranoia and baby-cry detective work (is he hungry? Sleepy? In pain?) By his seventh month we felt it was time for his initiation into the Spirit, and we chose Peter and his Interfaith work because its openness seemed to match our natural inclinations against any one strict dogma.
